CLEVIN'S STORY

Name: Clevin John
Studying: Graduated Mechanical Engineering
Role: IP – Manufacturing Board Office

We interviewed Clevin and asked him about his experience as an Industrial Placement colleague at Bentley Motors...

What made you choose an Industrial Placement at Bentley?

I've only pursued roles in the automotive industry because, from a young age, I’ve been drawn to it. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why, but it’s a gut feeling that’s always been with me. The idea of being part of manufacturing a car has always excited me, and it’s something I’m really passionate about. Bentley Early Careers team were the first to lend me a helping hand to jumpstart my career in the industry.

Could you share the most exciting thing you have done so far at Bentley?

I had the opportunity to be the project manager for the Bentley Dream Factory Workwear project where I managed the development of new ESD-compliant workwear, marking a first in the industry for all-inclusive ESD-compliant workwear. This involved overseeing the design, rollout plan, and dissemination management, impacting around 3,000 Bentley colleagues.

Additionally, I led the Manufacturing Ways of Working Guide Pack project, aimed at improving efficiency for desk based colleagues through the effective integration of MS Office 365. The project received attention and support from MoB Manufacturing.

How was your transition into your placement role and what support did you get from the early careers team?

I really appreciate the helpful Early Careers team. They’re always supportive and quick to resolve any issues that arise. I’ve received great advice whenever I’ve sought it, especially from Ash Mason and Wendy Hadaway. I also value the Masterclasses, which provide a warm welcome to various departments and offer insight into their role in the company’s development.

If you could offer advice to someone applying for placement or graduate roles at Bentley, what would you share from your journey?

My advice is to build your network and gain valuable insights, arrange 1:1 sessions with managers across different functions. Use this opportunity to ask about their role at Bentley, their background, and their career path. Inquire about key lessons they've learned in personal development, as well as the habits, organisational methods, or practices they use to prioritise and manage tasks. Don’t hesitate to seek personal development advice, including suggestions for your current trajectory and the next challenge you should focus on. Additionally, remember to fulfil all tasks assigned to you with dedication, no matter how small they may seem. This approach will help you create meaningful connections and gather valuable advice for your growth.

What aspects of Bentley have made your placement experience unique and enjoyable?

As an IP, my Ways of Working project gained board-level attention, and I had the opportunity to present it at the Bentley board meeting (BoMM) alongside Toby Marsden (Apprentice). The project received attention from Bentley’s IT department and is now being looked into for a full business rollout.

Also over the past year, I’ve also facilitated more than 25 manufacturing tours and had the opportunity to shake hands with VIPs, including Gerd Walker and Dr. Vachenauer from VW, Porsche representatives, the CEO of Liebherr and various other customers.

Additionally, working in manufacturing has provided me with the unique experience of supporting various board member's requests like custom-made trophies and personalised gifts made in house for colleagues being recognised.

From your experience, what sets Bentley apart from other industrial placements in terms of supporting early career talent?

Bentley’s facility is uniquely concentrated, with everything happening on the Crewe site, from vehicle design to sales and marketing, and everything in between. For those in the early stages of their career, this unique environment offers an incredible opportunity to explore the different functions through mini placements. Being in the early careers program, Bentley allows you to move across functions which is very rare compared to placement opportunities elsewhere.

Anything else you would like to mention?

Through my placement, I’ve identified my strengths and interests, discovering that I am particularly drawn to strategic roles. I’ve had invaluable support from managers whom I’ve built strong relationships with over the year and view as mentors. With their guidance I’ve secured a position in product strategy at Bentley. Additionally, with their advice, I’ve crafted a career plan with clear milestones, laying out my goals for the next five years. I cannot imagine this being possible anywhere else and I’m grateful for all the opportunities presented to me that helped me grow both personally and professionally.
