WE'VE SIGNED THE MENOPAUSE WORKPLACE PLEDGE

On World Menopause Day we’re delighted to give our support and commitment to the Wellbeing of Women’s Menopause Workplace Pledge, raising awareness and promising support for colleagues experiencing perimenopause and menopause symptoms.

Our gender inclusivity network BeInspired has made this pledge possible, working closely with colleagues across the business to raise awareness, introduce support networks and make Bentley a more inclusive place to be.

The Menopause Workplace Pledge is a UK wide initiative led by Wellbeing of Women, and calls on employers to commit to:

  • Recognising that the menopause can be an issue in the workplace and women need support
  • Talking openly, positively and respectfully about the menopause
  • Actively supporting and informing your employees affected by the menopause

About the menopause

The menopause is a natural part of life and occurs when a woman has stopped having periods for a year. The phase preceding the menopause is called the peri-menopause and for many women the symptoms that we would typically relate to the ‘menopause’ occur for months / years before the menopause itself as part of the peri-menopause. Symptoms are typically known to include hot flushes, brain fog, heavy bleeding and anxiety to name a few, but the list goes on and is now anticipated to include about 70 symptoms, which will vary between individuals – some women will experience mild symptoms while others may have symptoms that have a big impact on their everyday life. More worryingly, it’s estimated that 900,000 women have quit their jobs because of the menopause, as they struggle with symptoms in the workplace. That’s why our pledge is critical to making Bentley a more inclusive and supportive place to be.

How we’re supporting colleagues experiencing the menopause

  • Our BeInspired network group host a monthly peer-to-peer network group for colleagues experiencing symptoms of the peri-menopause and menopause or for people who just want to find out more about it, to educate themselves or to support a colleague, employee or friend/family member
  • Our Knowledge-Based Articles provide guidance to managers and colleagues to help build an understanding of the menopause and how to have discussions with your team
  • The Befit team deliver annual dedicated training on the subject to both colleagues and managers
  • Members of the BeInspired network can help signpost colleagues and managers to the support available

Speaking about the Menopause Workplace Pledge Allison Christou, Member of BeInspired and Government Affairs, Sustainability & CSR Programme Manager said: “This pledge is another milestone in Bentley’s history to make our workplace more inclusive for women, and it makes me proud to know I have the support of our network members, the board and colleagues to support this cause’.

We believe that everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs, belongs at Bentley. Everyone is entitled to respect and dignity and we positively celebrate the differences between people. This is a philosophy that is embraced by our leaders, championed by our colleague diversity groups and sits at the heart of our Beyond100 Strategy.
