ASH'S JOURNEY
Name: Ash Mason
Job Title: Early Careers Specialist
Function: People and Culture
We caught up with one of Bentley’s inspiring team members who began their journey as a trainee and has since progressed into a pivotal role as Early Careers Specialist. In this Q&A, he reflects on his development, the impact of his trainee experience, and what it means to support the next generation of talent. From memorable moments to career-defining advice, their story is a testament to Bentley’s supportive culture and the opportunities available to those ready to embrace them...
You started as a trainee and progressed into Early Careers Specialist, what’s that journey been like?
It only seems like yesterday that I was sat in my induction as a trainee! The rotational placements that were offered by the graduate scheme allowed me to dip my toes into several areas around the business and find what really made me tick, giving me a solid foundation. One of the key learnings from the past few years is how much I enjoy the people side of business and helping others, and as a result my career has been tailored towards this. It’s been an incredibly rewarding journey, it’s had its challenges, but I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.
How did your experience as a trainee influence the way you supported others in early careers?
For me, it’s a full-circle moment. As a former trainee I can relate to those who are currently on programme at Bentley, and I often draw upon my own lived experiences to ensure I am delivering the right kind of support, guidance and development opportunities.
Was there a moment when you realised Bentley was where you wanted to build your career?
I remember the first time I was sat in a Continental GT, admiring the luxurious interior and hearing the engine roar, it was like nothing else! I knew from that day I wanted to be a part of this amazing company and contribute in some way, shape, or form. When I joined the company, from the get-go I was given real responsibility and felt genuinely supported by those around me. It was this inclusive and supportive culture which confirmed that this was a company I wanted to build my career at.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out at Bentley or thinking to apply?
My biggest piece of advice to someone just starting out at Bentley would be to take every opportunity that comes your way. There are so many opportunities at Bentley and you never know where a simple ‘yes’ will take you. I’d encourage everyone to be curious, ask questions and be confident to share your opinion. Finally, network. There are so many talented and supportive people here who are more than happy to share their knowledge and want to help you on your career journey.
For anyone thinking of applying, just go for it! Make sure you research the company, show your enthusiasm for the brand / the role you are applying for and get across your unique selling point.
What’s next for you, and what are you most excited about in your new role?
In the next few weeks, I’ll be moving into a new role within the Future Skills team where I will be designing and delivering innovative learning solutions to help build critical capabilities to help achieve our strategic goals. It’s a very exciting time to be a part of Bentley, we’re in the most transformative phase in our company’s history and I’m looking forward to contributing to the development of the skills that will shape our future.
