INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION: LYDIA'S JOURNEY
In the ever-evolving automotive industry, women are making significant strides and Lydia, Communications Industrial Placement at Bentley Motors is one of them. With a passion for public relations and brand communications, Lydia is carving out a unique path in the field, inspired by female leaders in motorsport and driven by a desire to create impactful stories.
From University to Bentley Motors
Lydia's journey into corporate communications is shaped by her degree in Public Relations and Brand Communications. Recognising the evolving nature of communications in a digital world, she decided to pursue a placement at Bentley, where she supports various functions, including internal communications, product communications, and diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) initiatives.
Taking a gap year before university allowed Lydia to refine her career aspirations. "I didn’t want to rush into university," she explains. "That year helped me figure out what I wanted to do and led me to a degree that directly reflects what I am passionate about.”
Inspirational Role Models
Lydia's passion for communications in the automotive industry was fuelled by inspiring women in motorsport. She cites Sophie Ogg, former Director of Communications at Williams Formula One and now at McLaren Racing, as a key influence. "She’s a leader in a male-dominated industry and seeing her success made me realize that this is something I want to do.” Another influential figure is Charlotte Sefton, who transitioned from McLaren Racing to work in W Series before F1 Academy. "They are both standout figures who have shaped my aspirations."
Support and Mentorship at Bentley
Lydia describes how Bentley Motors has provided her with a strong support system, from onboarding programmes that introduce the company’s culture to one-on-one mentorship with experienced professionals. "My manager, Matthew Reed, has been in the industry for over a decade, and I learn so much from him. Our regular check-ins help me stay on track," she says.
Beyond her immediate team, Lydia has found inspiration in Emma Humphries, Bentley’s DEI manager. "Emma’s passion for her work is evident and it drives me to be just as dedicated. She’s not just doing a job, she’s creating real change."
The Importance of Networks
Lydia is a member of Bentley’s BeInspired network, which supports women in the workplace. One of the key events she attended was a talk on career navigation and pivoting with purpose, featuring leaders in Bentley such as Kirsty Bennett. "Hearing from women across the business was so insightful, especially as I’m starting my career."
She believes networks like BeInspired play a crucial role in connecting people across departments and providing a space for professional growth. "Workplaces can be busy, and you might not get the chance to meet everyone. These networks create opportunities to come together and support each other."
Future Career Goals
Lydia is keen on gaining more experience in media relations and event management, she also aims to expand her knowledge of automotive engineering. "It’s not my role, but being in this industry makes me appreciate the innovation and talent that goes into creating these cars."
Motivation and Career Growth
Lydia finds motivation in seeing the physical results of her work. Recently, she wrote a press release that was approved by Bentley’s Board of Management with minimal changes, she describes how "it was a huge achievement and reinforced my passion for writing. It makes me want to keep improving and producing more content."
Advice to Young Women in Automotive
Lydia emphasises the importance of following your passions and stepping outside your comfort zone. "Don’t be afraid to take a different path. I took a gap year, and it helped me figure out what I truly wanted. Success isn’t about following the crowd, it’s about finding what works for you."
She also advises aspiring professionals to gain hands-on experience. "Write for fun, build a portfolio and look for volunteering opportunities. There are amazing programs out there like ‘Girls on Track’, which connect young women with opportunities in the automotive industry."
International Women’s Day and Accelerating Action
For Lydia, International Women’s Day is about storytelling and inspiration, she describes how "great stories emerge about extraordinary women, and that’s so important for young people. You don’t know what’s out there until you read about it."
Lydia’s journey at Bentley Motors reflects the evolving landscape of the automotive industry, where women are increasingly taking on leadership roles and breaking barriers. Her story is a testament to the power of mentorship, the importance of seizing opportunities, and the value of following your passions.
As she continues her career, Lydia remains focused on growth, learning, and inspiring the next generation of women in communications. "Find what you love, work hard and take every opportunity you can. The industry is changing, and there’s a place for all of us in it."
